“Trains, Planes, and Automobiles” What a great movie. Add to those the sounds of dogs barking, clocks ticking, people talking, music playing, a tv in the background, a phone ringing, a baby crying. It’s sometimes difficult to find the ideal quiet place to meditate or practice mindfulness. That’s why you are taught to let all those distractions fade away. It’s not an easy thing to do. It takes practice. Rather than fight it, embrace it. Welcome the sounds and just let them pass through you. Don’t let invite them in to have a stopover, so they can settle in your brain and disrupt what you are trying to do. They are passing through anyway – here and gone, so let them go on their way. Once you’ve mastered the basics of deep mindfulness meditation, you should challenge yourself. There’s a specific way to do this without undermining your practice. It’s a skill that is taught in the EM course. Try it.
